In the 1760's Henry Strongman moved form nearby Peterborough to the then known town of North Monadnock and in 1771 the then Governor renamed the town to Dublin after the birth place of Strongman but this could be just folklore. There is a more detailed version of events in the http://www.townofdublin.org/pages/index web site.

The town is on two New Hampshire routes of 101 and 137 and is now becoming a residential area for people who work in Peterborough and other places. 4 Other Dublin's

Dublin, South Australia is just over 40 miles north of Adelaide but is a massive 10324 miles from Dublin Ireland. This Dublin had a population of 241 in the 2006 census and is a small town situated on Highway 1. The area is mostly farmland with some rural industry.

Dubin Church Australia
The town was named after the Irish Capital in  1856 by the 6th Governor of South Australia Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell who was originally from Ireland. According to the Dublin History Group the town boasts the best Butcher in the area and also the best Fruit and Veg store. The site has some nice pictures from the past and also some nice little stories about the area. Well worth a visit.

Dublin Ontario Canada is 3091 miles from Dublin Ireland and is part of the municipality of West Perth in Ontario. The largest community in West Perth is Mitchell and all of the local municipal offices are housed here. In the census of 2006 there were 8,839 in the West Perth area, the area is west of the City of Stratford which is home of Justin Bieber.

Dublin Island Sierra Leone Africa is off the coast near Freetown and is 3126 miles from Dublin Ireland. It is part of the Banana Islands and is one of the 2 main islands with the other being Ricketts Island. The two islands have a combined population of around 900 people.  Dublin Ohio is 3571 miles from Dublin Ireland and is home to a population of 41,751 people in the 2010 census. Again this is named after the Irish city and was named by a Dubliner called John Shields. History states that at the naming ceremony in 1810 Shields gave the following speech
"If I have the honour conferred upon me to name your village, with the brightness of the morn, and the beaming of the sun on the hills and dales surrounding this beautiful valley, it would give me great pleasure to name your new town after my birthplace, Dublin, Ireland."
Dublin Ohio

The village grew, but not too quick and in 1970 the population was 681 and the village had become a small town.  Around this time the 270 Interstate had been constructed and the population exploded and in 1987 the Town became  a City after reaching a population in excess of 5,000. As the city expanded it took in different townships which were close by, Dublin is now a suburb of Columbus which is the birth place of the golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.

The Dublin Ohio Historical Society has some wonderful stories, including one where Dublin missed out on being the Capital of Ohio due to a game of poker.
Another interesting story associated with the area dates back  also to 1810 where an Indian chief called Leatherlips was executed on the orders of his brother Roundhead for signing away native lands and witchcraft. He was executed in a cave in the Dublin area called the Olentangy Indian Caverns and now there is a monument in his honour in Dublin today which is quite strange in looks to say the least.

Update on Dublin Ireland

Last night in Tallinn, Estonia the Irish soccer team beat Estonia 4-0 in the first leg of the Euro 2012 playoff qualifier. There were goals from Keith Andrews (13) , Jon Walters (67) and Robbie Keane (71) (81pen). Estonia had 2 players sent off for 2 yellow card offences and this helped Ireland to their largest away win for some years.
Ireland Celebrate their 2nd Gaol Last night
On Tuesday next the 2nd leg will take place in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin and this should be a celebration of qualification for the European Championship for only the 2nd time in history, the previous time was Germany 1988. There should be a full house for this game.

Also yesterday Michael D Higgins received the seal of office to become the 9th president of Ireland, in an inauguration ceremony in Dublin Castle. At the ceremony yesterday were the two previous office holders, Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese and this is the first time in the history of the office of President that there has been more than 2 living Presidents past and present. Here is a short video which captures some of the ceremony from yesterday.

Now onto Dublin California. In a previous post on this site I mentioned that Dublin Ireland was twinned with San Jose, California. About 27 miles north of San Jose is a city call Dublin with a population of 46,063 people in the 2010 US census. It is estimated that the city will be home to over 75,000 people in 2030. This Dublin is named after Dublin Ireland which is 5075miles away. Dublin is situated on the 580 interstate and is home to crossroads of the 580 and 680 interstate and is known as the crossroads of the bay area.
In 1850, Michael Murray and Jeremiah Fallon came to this area from Ireland. They purchased 1,000 acres of land from Jose Amador and built homes for their families. The area began to grow as many settled in the area. By 1877 the first schoolhouse in the Amador-Livermore Valley was constructed in Dublin, along with a church, two hotels, Green's Store, a wagon and blacksmith shop, and a shoemaker's shop. The Murray Schoolhouse, Green's Store, St. Raymond's Church and the old cemetery have been preserved and are now located on Donlan Way, the area became known as Dublin and in 1982 the City incorporated.
